I wrote home to tell my mother About my post in Tennessee How I was to guard Saltpeter cave and mine it with every ounce of me When I first rode up on her The valley took my breath The orders were to go under So I went with sunlight and regret this powder will win the war for us son be fast be strong be mean He strode away and echoes say He yelled "careful you ain't seen" Turned to stone in the dark Turned to stone in the dark All alone All alone, a hardened heart I saw the torchlight but I could not move Even with that fire shoved right up in my eyes It was just a little schoolboy Followed closely by the loudest cry Every soul around came to ponder How for 15 years a man could stay down in the deep, in my standard issue grays i'd just laid down to rest my weary frame Turned to stone in the dark Turned to stone in the dark All alone All alone a hardened heart Then the grassy cove three showed up right away dragged me out and in the churchyard threw me in underneath an unmarked grave They said it was my right, my rightful place But the school kids they weren't no help Starin' at me all the way home And that's when I knew what had happened to me Trapped above this rock, these rocky bones Turned to stone in the dark Turned to stone in the dark All alone All alone a hardened heart So the grassy cove 3 lifted my body up again Buried me beneath the finest tree Swearing on their unknown grave They'd never say where they set me free Most of the time I hope my Momma Can see me on my guard from up above I protect this cave Should someone enter without love
